While many people in the world have been dealing with the concern of training children, there have been many great philosophers who believed that training parents is of the same importance, if not more. It’s quite natural for parents to feel offended when they receive parenting advice but it should be noted here that training parents is an indirect way of training children. So, it’s time for us to start laying emphasis on training parents more than we normally do. If we take a look at the gist of 21st century parenting, we usually find parents provoking their children to anger or somehow discouraging them without meaning to do so in their day to day living because we’re living in a time where it’s challenging and important for us to exercise self-control more than before. It’s true that being a parent is more difficult than being a spouse because being a good partner is a matter of mutual happiness of two people in love but being a parent demands something more from us- the responsibility of nurturing our future, our next generation, lies on our shoulders and their well-being lies in the hands of our parenting skills. It’s time we realize the gravity of our responsibility- no individual influences another individual’s future as much as parents do. Not only do we have to learn to be good partners but we also need to learn to be good parents. If you lay down a proper standard of living for your children but they choose not to take it, you are not liable for their choices or their future. However, you are liable for your children’s bad conduct if you fail to set a proper pattern for them to follow in the first place. Let’s consider it this way- if your children turn out to be good, it’s not always you who will receive the credit for it, but if your children turn out to be bad, the debit will always go to you. So, what should be our attitude when we think of trying to do some damage control? The first thing we need to do is accept the blame and consider the aspects where our parenting skills must have failed. This will not only help us in understanding the problem at hand but also in understanding our children’s feelings better. Next, we need to patient while thinking of ways in which we can rectify what we must have added to our children’s personality accidentally. Coming to an end, I want to re-emphasize on the point that the living standard of parents affects the lifestyle of children; it is very important that we handle this responsibility with utmost caution and care because it is in our hands to set the right pattern for our children to follow. After all, our children will be what we are now.
