Growing children

Aspirations, Humility, Defeat

From a certain point of time, the most important thing that is capable of keeping your children pushing forward in life is an aspiration of some kind. In fact, aspirations play a crucial role in their life and it is in your hands to help them decide on their goals and work towards them because children just don’t grow up to hate or love something for no reason. As a parent, you should always keep in mind that your children might fancy your profession and you should also not work against them if it’s otherwise. If you are someone who loves popularity, then your children might possibly aspire to be directors, millionaires or famous academicians, or they might also prefer jobs that keep them in the background. Nevertheless, there is a possibility for your lifestyle to affect your children’s aspirations. So, it is safe to say that you play an important role in what your children turn out to be as adults. Help them pursue goals that are noble, ambitions that enable them in being true to themselves and their potential. For example, if your children love to make people laugh, encourage them to be stand-up comedians. Are they creative? Let them paint worlds, create dimensions, or give the world a rhythm- whatever suits them. Most importantly, help them in enjoying the journey. The tricky thing about dreams is that they like to keep changing forms. So, your children will end up feeling like they are stuck in a maze unless they learn to take it one day at a time, enjoying the little moments. Let me also point out here that when I said goals, I mean both long-term and short-term. In fact, encourage your children to have both of them. It’s the short-term goals that keep them on track till they reach their long-term goals. Moving on, it is also important that you teach your children humility. When your children are going down the road towards their goals, there is a high chance for them to run into pride and arrogance. They may find many things to boast about- eloquence, skills, or IQ levels. This is where parents play another important role. On one hand, you may help your children realize their potential for greatness but on the other hand, you should also teach them to stay grounded by humility, which is one of the traits of great men. Encourage them to be better versions of themselves everyday but also make sure they realize that humility takes them a long way. Teach them perseverance and that it is sometimes not a solo pursuit. You should encourage them to be good at everything they do, from winning at ball games to ranking first in their class, but also teach them to be humble on the way. After all, we all know how ironically humility works. This goes on without saying that you should also teach them not to look down upon those who lose and to appreciate those who are better than them at what they do because you never know when a person is going to reach his life-altering moment; the student with all E grades might end up being the next great iconic figure to be penned down in history, or that crazy kid in the class might be bestowed with a position of great responsibility and weight at some point in future. The thing is, teach your children not to turn anyone into a laughing stock and not to become one either. Moreover, you should teach them that it is a noble thing to accept defeat with humble spirit. You can often find winners who are humble but you can rarely find losers who are not bitter. Children usually tend to make excuses when they lose- like the sun was glaring at their face, the teacher was playing favourites, or the judge wasn’t being fair- and it is your duty to make them understand that acknowledging defeat is one of the greatest virtues of mankind for only then can they learn from their mistakes. Let them know that it is failure that makes a great teacher and not success.
