Allowing children to make their own choices

It is not very uncommon to find parents making all decisions for their children until they turn eighteen or get married, especially in conservative families, and it is strongly believed to be the right thing. Contrary to this deep-rooted and popular belief, it is actually a good thing for parents to let their children make decisions for themselves even before they turn eighteen. If you do otherwise, it will be impossible for them to make right decisions when the time comes and you will be accountable for the damage that comes along with it. So, it is actually a good decision on your part to let your children make choices of their own. Let them explore a variety of paths and find for themselves the paths that they feel are right with a little guidance from your own experiences. From dressing sense to attitude, let everything be according to their choices and if something were to go wrong, let them face the consequences that come along with choices like a package deal. It may sound harsh but it is going to prepare them for those times in life where a simple choice would turn everything upside down. The hardest impact of choices can be seen when your children get married and have a family of their own. So, it is rather unwise to wait for your children until they get married to make choices on their own because it will only leave them like lost souls wandering around in circles with a hazy sight. A pressing advice to parents: Please give your children opportunities to make decisions of their own. That way, they will know not to know go down the wrong paths when they turn eighteen and suddenly life starts hurling hurdles and challenges at them. Help them in understanding how to make right choices before it’s too late. We all know how crazy and deceptive the world is and it is your job as a parent to prepare your children for their future right from their childhood days. So, why not start the training by giving them the freedom to make their own decisions? Give them an environment that is a replica of what the world is going to feel like when they are walking on their own. Ask yourself a basic question: Do I want my children to be indecisive and confused when they turn into adults? Or do I want them to be wise and keep themselves in a worthy manner by knowing what choices are right and noble? It is quite important to point out here that your definition of a ‘right choice’ might be different compared to your children’s. That’s when you need to start respecting their choices, no matter how messed up they are. Don’t expect them to make the same choices you made at that age and remember that some children like to learn practically, the hard way. However, the thing is, you are the ones who shouldered them as they learned to walk and believe me, that’s what they need you to keep doing.
